I was going to try to write a review today, but something far more pressing has arisen. It appears I’ve been double-nominated to construct a harem. I cannot turn a blind eye to this. Thanks to KimchiSama and Edgy Anime Teen for issuing the challenge.
I’m not really a fan of the harems. In fact, I’m sometimes angered by the notion of X number of girls inexplicably attracted to a protagonist far more idiotic than myself. That goes for works of both fiction AND reality.
My slice-of-life story isn’t all that eventful, really. Often times, I actually feel more like a minor character in everyone else’s stories. For the most part, I’m okay with that. There are times, though, in which it really sucks. My harem would likely reflect that.
– Link to the people who nominated you.
– Use the “Build a Harem” image.
– Pick 5 anime characters (any show and any gender) that would be in your harem if you were in a harem anime. Explain (if you want) why you chose them.
– Make sure each character you pick falls into some kind of harem character archetype: Childhood friend, tom boy/girl, genki girl/boy, loli/shota, trap, tsundere, yandere, kuudere, dandere, etc.
– Nominate others.
The Childhood Friend Trope
Mayuri Shiina (Steins;Gate)
Mayushii is too wholesome for this harem, damn it! Alas, here she is. She’s been here since we were kids…always supporting me in spirit or finance. All she really wants is for me to be happy. Hell, she’d walk to the end of time for me, and yet here I am being an indecisive fool. Because the universe hates her, and because my harem is inherently tragic in nature, she’ll probably die…and she’ll do so again, and again, and again due to the abilities of one of the other girls in this group.
Tsundere: The harsh one that’s actually vulnerable on the inside
Eri Sawachika (School Rumble)
Eri is the “rich bitch” who doesn’t take shit from anybody because she doesn’t have to. Well, at least that’s what most people seem to think. The reality, though, is that her intimidating exterior shields an individual who is actually quite insecure and jealous. Some of it stems from her absent father; some of it comes from having to deal with insincere confessions from X number of guys every day.
Eri is the girl I’m in a love-hate relationship with. Our prideful, stubborn personalities clash in an emotional tug-of-war. We’ll share very intimate moments from time to time, and for one reason stupid reason or another we’ll end up in various situations that mirror a real relationship, only under the banner of “just friends”. We’ll also argue…a lot.
Low key, she’ll be jealous of all the other girls vying for my attention, and be much more upset than she’d ever care to let on. She’ll try her hardest to maintain her blunt, authoritative persona, but inside she’ll be a hot mess of jealousy and insecurity. People will tell her that we should be with each other because we’re 100% true to ourselves when we’re together. That’s true, but like everyone else in my harem, we’re doomed to fail.
There are some who think Eri does actually end up with her love interest, but that notion comes from basically one page in the School Rumble Z manga series, and it’s open to interpretation. The outcome of her “relationship” is never actually specified.
The Admirable Athlete
Miki Makimura (Devilman: Crybaby)
This is the type of person we should all aspire to be. She’s outgoing, energetic, and kind-hearted. Being a bi-racial girl in a very homogeneous society, Miki has been bullied throughout much of her childhood. From that, though, she has come to look beyond initial appearances, and to form her own judgements of people independent of what others say. Her ideals valuing empathy and understanding end up making her one of the most loved, and most hated people IN THE WORLD. Unfortunately, she is never quite able to fully express her feelings to the MC, which in this case is me.
She may also fall into the childhood friend trope, but I’ve understood her relationship with her love interest more so as that of honorary brother and sister than friends.
Yandere: The dangerous one
Kurumi Tokisaki (Date A Live)
Now here’s a chick who is so yandere that she might even try to kill me in addition to everyone else in the harem. At a glance, Kurumi comes off as innocent and elegant enough, but she flips the switch very quickly. She’s also a bit of a sexual deviant who won’t shy away from using sexuality to lure men into her grasp…Deviancy is a plus in my book.
If you set aside all of the murder, Kurumi isn’t really that bad of a person. Maybe I should better try to explain that. See, most of the people she kills are violent criminals like rapists or would-be kitten killers. Her personality is also made more complicated by the fact that there are countless instances of her that each share the same consciousness, but also can act of their own free will.
She was actually tricked into becoming a spirit that hunts down other spirits, and ironically ends up a side chick in an unwanted harem full of them. I’m wondering if any of this will change in the upcoming 3rd season of the series.
Kuudere – The aloof one
Mei Misaki (Another)
Mei is the most reserved and withdrawn girl of the lot. Behind her heterochromia lies a unique ability that will provide her with knowledge of the impending tragedy that the rest of us might not necessarily know. Still, her overall antisocial and passive nature will mean that she’ll refrain from taking action of any kind until everything has already gone to hell. At that point, will it be too late?
Origami Tobiichi (Date A Live) as kuudere girl
I didn’t want two Date A girls in the group, so much like in her own series, Origami gets the boot. She’s an excellent student-athlete, and fighter with a very calm, cool, and collected persona. She’s very analytical, and awkward because of it; her attempts to court me would be void of any unnecessary flirting or social formalities. There would be some comedic moments that result from it, but regrettably nothing more.
Izumi Akazawa (Another) as tsundere girl
Izumi, the no-nonsense Class 3 Head of Countermeasures, is a prime example of a blunt, feisty type who won’t drop her guard for just anybody. And how could she? The lives of her classmates and their families are her responsibility. It’s a heavy burden to bear. Still, maybe she’ll remember me from a time before everything devolved into a chaotic mess. Like Eri, she’ll put up an “in-control” facade of sorts, but deep down be rife with jealousy.
Sakura Matou as either childhood friend/ possibly dandere girl
Sakura’s generally shy and soft-spoken nature is the product of a lifetime of abuse. Despite her history and feelings of inferiority toward her sister, she still somehow manages to get up and maintain an air of both stoicism and kindness. Maybe if we’re lucky, Sakura’s Rider is available and can save the group from destroying itself. Unfortunately, Sakura is anything but.
There exists an alternate timeline in which my harem consists of just Monika (Doki Doki Literature Club).
There’s a certain appeal to someone that would be willing to destroy the world for me; I admire that kind of dedication. Monika is also surprisingly intelligent and inspirational. She’d push me to be a better version of myself.
So there you have it, folks. As per usual, if you feel so inclined to take part in this exercise you are free to do so. Just link me in it per the rules.
